Now I am finally here & am absolutely loving it! It’s very difficult to be a new grad without a job yet but I have been spending my days studying for the NCLEX in various Starbucks and libraries. Hopefully I will get my code so I can sign up to take this dreaded exam within the next few weeks so then I can explore more than just Boston’s study spots :) I’ll keep you all posted.

Be kind.

It is what I think of now when I read the blog by Ruby, the MSF epidemiologist, who has been working in the refugee camps of northern South Sudan. We all just want to look after our families, and to do that people sometimes need help.

I have been home for a while now and am only able to begin to process the experiences, the good and the not so good, of working in South Sudan, and my return from this struggling, fragile country.”

- Lorna Adams is a Canadian Family Physician, who has recently returned from working for MSF in the world’s newest country, South Sudan. Now back at home in Canada, her blog is being published retrospectively. Read don’t have my degree in hands just yet (1 week!), I do want to thank my lucky stars for getting through my nursing program in once piece.

According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, in 2011 U.S. nursing schools turned away 75,587 qualified applicants from baccalaureate and graduate nursing programs due to shortages in faculty, clinical sites, classroom space and budget restrictions.

I was fortunate enough to get admitted right into my universities program in 2008 but considering there does not seem to be any resolution to the shortage of nursing faculty and the fact that money doesn’t grow on trees, it doesn’t seem there will be any less competition for pre-nursing students applying now.

If you are looking into nursing school I urge you to focus on your science prereqs. How you do in those Bio 101 or Structure and Function classes is not only a huge piece of the admission puzzle, but it also is a strong predictor on how you will perform in the nursing program.

I hate to say it but I kinda wish I could go back to my basic science class and learn more about the body. Not that I don’t understand how the body works, but lets just say I am still a tad bit confused with the whole aldosterone renin what-not system and that’s probably going to be important one day.

So basically my advice to those of you trying to get into nursing school: take your sciences seriously. They will help you get into the program & stay in the program.

Good luck.

-K.

New Beginnings.

I never thought four years could fly so fast. Just yesterday I was worried about figuring out how to do a head-to-toe and now I am weeks away from finishing my degree in nursing.

I plan to use this page to document my experiences as a new nurse so other newly graduated nurses can hopefully learn from my mistakes and maybe share some tricks-of-the-trade that I learn along the way.

As for me, I am a 21 year old graduate moving to Boston & hoping to:

1. Pass the NCLEX.

2a. Get a nursing job in pediatrics.

2b. If 2a fails then any nursing job will do.

2c. If 2b fails then Im in trouble & this Blog will do no good.

3. Survive my first year as an RN.

I hope you enjoy!
